WE ARE THE HOPEFUL:
Exploring Mental Health through Design
Project Lead
CONCEPT
Mental health is a huge passion of mine, and when presented with the opportunity to propose a project that combined mental health and design, I jumped. At its core, HOPEFUL was a design-based exploration looking at the intersection of mental health and theatre. Our main goal was to take the emotions inside your head and pull them out into the theatre space. As the project lead, I selected my team of designers, who met before the official rehearsal period started, led auditions for actors, designed on two pieces, did stage manager duties like creating calendars, daily calls, and rehearsal reports, and ultimately had the final say in piece concepts and execution.

MY CONTRIBUTION
In addition to producing and stage managing this project, Lee and I created a rep plot for a proscenium set-up in the underground theatre. I created the lighting design for "And We Ring, Inescapable," based on a spoken word poem by one of our peers. Our main theme was to create an anxiety-filled theatre space, similar to the tone of the poem itself. I also created the sound design for "Closure," which was an exploration of getting through depression and making it out on the other side. Here, we combined the lighting designer's personal writings with poems from my favorite poet, Andrea Gibson.
